The Gond tribal community is one of central India’s largest indigenous communities and their art is an expression of their everyday quest for life. The Gond art rendezvous with the belief that “viewing a good image begets good luck”. This inherent belief led the Gonds to decorate their houses and the floors with traditional tattoos and motifs. Gond art is different from other traditional Indian artforms by letting the artists to use their own signature motifs and patterns to fill the art in order to bring life to the artists’ imagination. These signature patterns with vibrant colors form the very essence of Gond art. This beautiful piece is an image of Lord Ganesha sitting in Padmasana pose. Our artist used a style of involving curves and triangles to fill in the painting and lushed the strokes with brilliant colors.

Apart from nature, Gond Paintings draw inspiration from myths and legends and theme around the mythical beasts and the intricate detailing of nature. Though most Gond paintings do not propagate Gods in human forms, this particular chimeric God, Lord Ganesha with an elephant head is fondly adopted as a concept.

Lord Ganesha, the God of all beginnings, is one of the most celebrated deities in Gond culture and thus he is a popular theme for their artists. Ganesha is widely revered as the remover of obstacles, the patron of arts and sciences and the God of intellect and wisdom. He is also the son of the popularly known Lord Shiva. Lord Ganesha is found in Gond art in different forms, especially in his childhood days where he plays mischievously with rats (his vehicle!) and cherishes his favorite sweet, laddu.
