Madhubani (Mithila) painting, one of the oldest known art forms of ancient India, was born in Madhubani (Madhu-honey; bani-forest) district of Bihar. Said to have originated 2500 years ago, this art form is practiced and passed on through generations predominantly by women of Mithila region. Painted during worships,  occasions, and marriages, each of these paintings carries a different meaning.

This painting is a decorative art showcasing a celebration where human figures are drawn in abstracts, along with lush of flora and fauna in series of circles which is typical of Madhubani art.When painted during marriage celebration, this art with elephants, peacocks, parrots, and trees, repeatedly in series of circles are believed to bring the new wed progeny and prosperity.

Themes of Madhubani paintings reflect the beliefs ingrained in the culture of Mithila people.
